Line collection

The Line collection is a series of ceramic sculptures presenting letterforms of a bespoke geometric alphabet. From right angles to curves and diagonals, every layer responds to the layer below, and as the layers build, they create infinitely different geometries, which makes every Line sculpture of every letterform, truly one-of-a-kind. Designing the sculptures of the Line collection began by drawing hundreds of forms based on a common visual language: a curve, an arch, an angle and a straight. And then we created a visual framework for combining these elements in a way that allows each sculpture to be unique, while still visually connecting each sculpture to all other sculptures in the series.

Making Waves collection

The Making Waves collection is a series of ceramic sculptures, and its cascading geometries reference a ‘Reproduction’ number of COVID-19. The lower the R number, the smaller the wave of the virus, and the smaller the wave of our Making Waves sculptures. The Making Waves collection was first shown in a solo exhibition at Melbourne Design Week 2021.

Origins collection

The Origins collection is a series of ceramic sculptural vases referencing different letters and characters from the English alphabet. These forms range in size and include the Triumph, Moderne, Asterisk, Utopia and Juno. The shapes of the Origins collection connect to Matt’s background in writing and literary public art projects. Both the Moderne and Juno were featured at the National Gallery of Victoria’s ‘Art of Dining’ event in 2019.

Pyli collection

The Pyli collection is named after the Greek word Πυλη, which translates as gate in English. These Pyli artworks are designed to appear like a gateway to an unnamed place that is accessed via a key, and the internal shape of the Pyli form is shaped as if to fit an ancient skeleton key. The overall design is influenced by Matt’s time spent in Greece, where he was surrounded by Cycladic art and many gates to unnamed places. The forms of the Pyli collection are presented in three different heights: small, medium and large, and appear in two different variations: the Pyli pieces with a ‘tail’ at either bottom edge are considered as being ‘latched’, while the Pyli pieces that are equally straight on both sides are considered ‘latchless’.

Floating Cubes collection

The Floating Cubes collection is a series of ceramic sculptures that seemingly float in the air and explore notions of weight and weightlessness. These cubes balance on a small point, and are made in a variety of sizes and mixtures of clay bodies. These Floating Cubes are a connection to Csilla’s childhood in Communist Romania, where hard-edged geometries were often found.

Fold collection

The Fold collection is a series of ceramic sculptures that accentuate the ebb and flow between different forms and textures. Using the foundational elements of black glaze, white glaze, and unglazed clay, along with forms that are both hard-edged and curved, the Fold collection embodies a sense of movement between each piece, and each set of three pieces can be positioned in a variety of sculptural configurations. The Fold collection has been exhibited at private galleries and have been finalists for awards in Australia.

Decodance collection

The Decodance collection is a series of ceramic sculptural vases that reference the decadence of the Art Deco movement and its proposed future of bold and functional geometric forms. They are made in three different sizes and three different forms: ‘dipped’ in glaze, and ‘ribbed black’ and ‘ribbed white’. The Decodance collection first appeared at the 2017 Melbourne Ceramics Market.
